Why you may never be able to track, find and recover your phone if you rely on IMEI tracker that do not work in Nigeria

4 Critical reasons why using IMEI has failed in tracking phones, especially if you use brands like Tecno, Infinix and Itel

If IMEI alone doesn’t work, what else can you use to track and find your phone when lost or stolen?

How a new app in Africa has been able to help more than 10,000 smartphone users find their phones?

When your phone is stolen, and you ask for help either from your friends or you go online to check how you can track the phone, one thing you will see always is;

“Track your phone using IMEI Tracker”

Most information you will likely come across revolve around using IMEI to find your phone. However, the sad reality is, the IMEI solution doesn’t work for people who eventually seek to use this to track and find their phone!

The question; why do we then have so much misinformation about using IMEI tracker to track a lost or stolen phone? Well, it is simple, a lot of bloggers and article writers in the technology space in Nigeria in most cases copy content from abroad, especially the western world without carefully checking to be sure we have a similar situation here and their information is also relevant locally.

Let me explain further, in Europe, America, and other western countries, there are bodies or organizations that manages IMEI numbers of all registered devices in their countries. There are a database of all smartphones with their current owner, they have been able to successfully tie every smartphone to a particular owner. In cases of theft that must be reported by the owner of the phone, such theft incidences or reports are sent immediately to these bodies, and such a phone is immediately blacklisted on all network providers within the country.

Blocking the phone will ensure that the phone cannot be used again, in that country where the case was reported.

Now, let’s come back to Nigeria, there is no pool of such data or any organization that manages such here.  An attempt was made at some point several years ago to have a database of all smartphones in Nigeria using the IMEI. They could not even proceed because many of the low-end smartphone devices from brands that have the bulk of the smartphones in the market such as Infinix, Tecno, and iTel sometimes assigned a single IMEI to hundreds of phones.

This way, a phone is never unique to a particular user and there is no database for such which is why IMEI trackers has largely failed in helping users to either blacklist or find that specific phone. At times, people go through the route of contacting network providers to assist to find the exact location of a stolen or missing phone. Unfortunately, you need authorization from either a competent court of law or an assistant inspector general of police for this kind of approval to be given. These authorizations are difficult to get, even when you do, it doesn’t guarantee that you will ever be able to track down the phone.

This bottleneck prevents you and I or anyone from being able to use the IMEI number alone in Nigeria to track a phone.

Let me say it the way it is, your IMEI number is useless and no one is telling you about this.

Wondering why nothing has been done about this in the past?

Good thought. Setting up an infrastructure that can track and find a smartphone is complex, and requires a lot of innovative technologies for it to work efficiently. In western words,  people rely largely on the extensive coverage of internet connectivity, and those technologies are built around the internet.

In Nigeria, internet connectivity isn’t everywhere just yet.  In fact, more than 70% of smartphone users intentionally turn off the internet on their phones as a way of controlling the usage of expensive internet data.

This is one reason why all imported phone tracking solution that may have worked in other countries of the world has failed woefully here in Nigeria. Imagine you have turned off the internet connectivity on your smartphone minutes before your phone was stolen, and you want to now use an internet-dependent solution to track and find such a phone? This is just impossible any more.

Is there any hope for smartphone users in Nigeria to track and find their phones when lost or stolen? Absolutely yes, and that is what I am about to share with you now!

One way that truly works in Nigeria if you ever want to successfully track and find your phone with IMEI tracker!

My wife’s phone was stolen several years ago, I couldn’t get any help. I went to the police to make an official complaint, even went there a couple of times to follow up, hoping I would be able to get the phone back! Nothing came out of it and I eventually lost hope.

This was one of the reasons I join a group of Nigerians, who were no longer happy with how we all have to go through this pain with no help in-sight.

This birthed the development of the Pins Mobile Security Application IMEI tracker feature that can now help you can track and find your phone when it is lost or stolen here in Nigeria or anywhere in the world with or without internet connectivity.

It ensures it blocks all loopholes thieves have used in the past to get away with the crime of stealing people’s phones! Good thing is, it is easy to use, and you don’t have to pay anyone to assist you to track any more, just the way it is easy to use WhatsApp, you can use the PMS app to track your phone on any other phone or a computer. We have also ensured that this IMEI tracker is free for you to use completely.  You will however need to load your SMS wallet since the offline tracking works using text messages.

Thank you for sharing your thought, I really appreciate it.

To shed more light, no network provider will ever provide the location of a smartphone by just calling them in Nigeria. There is a standing law that forbids them from doing this. In fact, you need either authorization from an assistant inspector of police or a letter from court before telcos can release a location. If any telcos/network provider providers a location of a phone without these authorizations, it is criminal!

Think about it from this angle, if location can easily be assessed from telcos, then criminals can use such information to trail and perpetrate evil at will, this is the reason why there is a standing order to protect that.

As such, it is your responsibility as a smartphone owner to ensure you protect your device.
